What is a trade union?
A trade union is an association of workers bound by common production and professional interests related to their work. They unite to work together to achieve better working conditions and pay, and to simply help each other in difficult times.
The word “trade union” has become familiar to us, and it’s usually associated with providing material assistance and organizing cultural and educational activities. A trade union does all of this, but its primary tasks and goals are to represent and protect the social and labor rights and interests of its members.
Why do we need a trade union?
It’s difficult for an employee and employer to resolve social and labor relations issues alone. Sometimes they lack knowledge of the law, lack courage, and sometimes their composure in a dispute can falter. And who wants to ruin their relationship with their boss? It’s difficult to enforce legal demands alone.
To this end, the trade union:
- conducts negotiations with employers and government representatives; concludes agreements and collective bargaining agreements on behalf of employees and monitors their implementation;
- exercises control over the compliance of employers with labor legislation;
- protects union members from unlawful penalties and dismissals;
- achieves employment, promotes the creation of new jobs, prevents mass layoffs;
- seeks fair and decent wages, benefits and pensions, as well as social protection for trade union members;
- through its elected bodies, labor safety inspectorates and authorized representatives, exercises control over the state of labor safety and the environment;
- participates in collective labor disputes;
- nominates its representatives to protect the interests of trade union members in the commission on social insurance, labor disputes, and the commission for investigating industrial accidents;
- provides free consultations on legal (labor, housing, pension) issues;
- represents and protects the interests of trade union members in bodies that consider labor disputes (KTS, court);
- conducts cultural, educational, sports and health work among employees and their family members.
Only a trade union member has the right to expect:
- protection in case of dismissal at the initiative of the employer;
- assistance in case of violation of the labor or collective agreement by the employer;
- assistance in resolving issues related to labor safety, compensation for damage caused to health in the performance of work duties;
- a free consultation on economic, legal and other socially significant issues;
- to receive financial assistance from trade union funds in difficult life situations.
