National Unity Day as a Source of National Pride

Why was 17 September chosen as National Unity Day? How did this commemorative date come into being, and what historical events are associated with it?

These and other questions were the focus of today’s Unified Information Day at the Centre. The staff were addressed by Sergey Kaun, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Source Studies of the Faculty of History of Belarusian State University. He spoke about the events of 1939, the reunification of the Belarusian lands and the significance of this date for the modern Republic of Belarus, and answered questions from the Centre’s employees.

“Many public holidays embody the wisdom of the Belarusian people,” said Sergey Kaun.

The meeting provided an opportunity to take a broader look at National Unity Day through the events, people and processes that influenced the country’s subsequent development. This helps us not only to remember historical dates but also to understand why they remain significant today.
